At St. John’s we enjoy robust seasonal adult formation, including book studies and topic-focused group discussions. In Lent 2022, Rev. Lisa & Rev. Dorothy are leading a powerful class on Aging. Click on the video below to view a piece of their discussion:
Recent books include:
- Letters from the farm: A Simple Path for a Deeper Spiritual Life by Becca Stevens
- Searching for Sunday: loving, leaving, and finding the church by Rachel Held Evans
- Creation and the Cross: The Mercy of God for a Planet in Peril by Elizabeth A. Johnson
Last year during Lent we explored questions around our Episcopal identity in a fun and approachable way, using the online quiz “What kind of Anglican are you?”
Adult formation opportunities are announced at our services and in our weekly enews.
Contemplative Prayer & Study Group
In 2020, our Contemplative Prayer & Study Group moved to Zoom and continues to meet there. We meet weekly on Thursday at 10:00 during school term time. All are invited.
We select a book to study relevant to contemplation and action. Recent books that we have read include Mirabai Starr’s Wild Mercy and Brian McLaren’s Do I Stay Christian?
After a brief prayer, and a Taizé chant, a portion of the selected week’s assignment (usually one or two chapters) is discussed. Even for those who have not been able to read the chapters, discussion is still possible, so do not let that hinder you. Twenty minutes of meditative silence follows the discussion. Finally, the Taizé chant is sung again. The meeting ends at 11:00.
If you have any questions or if you would like the link to join us on Zoom, please contact Wendy McFee. We hope you will join us.
