Clergy Blog – Pentecost & The Church

On Sunday, June 4, 2017, we celebrated Pentecost.  It’s the feast that marks the coming of the Holy Spirit, as promised by Jesus, with the Spirit descending onto the disciples and enabling them to bring solidarity to those who were being called together to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ.  We marked the day […]

Meet Our New Curate

We are pleased to announce that the Rev. Alissa Anderson will be joining the staff of St. John’s as Curate, beginning July 1. Mo. Alissa is a recent graduate (cum laude) of the General Theological Seminary, where she earned a Master of Divinity and Certificate in Spiritual Direction, and she is also the 2017 recipient of the Bishop of Newark Preaching Prize. She will be helping Fr. Joe with all aspects of ministry at St. John’s, but will be focusing particularly on outreach and on children, youth, and family ministries. Mo. Alissa and her husband, Josh, will be moving from Manhattan to Larchmont in early July, and look forward to becoming a part of St. John’s. The role of curate is traditionally filled by a newly ordained priest right out of seminary, serving the parish for an agreed upon amount of time in order to learn all of the different functions of parish ministry. A Note from Mother Alissa: Dear St. John’s Community, I am delighted to share with you my joy at being called as St. John’s newest curate, and I can’t wait to begin my time with you this summer. A bit about me: before attending seminary, I earned a BA and MA in English, and I still love to enjoy the English language by reading and writing. My love of stories did not, however, lead me to academia as I once suspected, but to the Church, where I get to live out an amazing story of hope, redemption, and life abundant, and help others think about the stories they are telling about God and themselves. This road has been filled with blessings I could not have imagined. I recently celebrated my seminary graduation, and will finish up a year as the Wisdom Year Pastoral Resident at Grace Church in New York in early June. I will then have some time off to pack, visit with family in the Midwest, shop for a vehicle, and simply relax. Following this time of refreshment, I will move in to the curate’s apartment and begin work at St. John’s in July. I am coming to Larchmont with my husband, Josh, who will commute into Manhattan as he continues working at the Episcopal Church Foundation. We are both enthusiastic about the prospect of enjoying the conveniences of suburban living while remaining not too far removed from the city. As we happily anticipate getting to know the Larchmont area, we welcome any and all recommendations of favorite sites and activities. I look forward to getting to know all of you and hearing more about how God is at work at St. John’s. Sincerely, The Rev. Alissa Anderson
